Men of War 1 (2011)

This is a kind of decent surprise for a comic in The New 52 I think. It is exactly what it sounds like. It is a military based comic. There are two stories in it at this point. The first one is Sgt Rock as the second one seems to be a war story based on Navy seals. I really didn't expect this one and am pretty pleased.

The what I will consider main story is written by Ivan Brandon. I do not know if this guy has written anything before honestly. This story though is well written and brings Sgt Rock into modern times quite well. I say that because I always felt he didn't age well as a character. The artist is Tom Derenick who again, I am not aware of seeing his art before. It is realistic animation is how I describe it in my mind. It is just slightly more exaggerated proportions on the people but that is not so much that it takes away from the realistic story.

The second story is as a stated about some Navy Seals. It is written by Jonathan Vankin, who I have not read anything from before, I believe he tried to stay accurate to the real world Seals and did decent enough for a comic book I believe. Phil Winslade, the artist, has kind of an '80s look to his art. It is fantastic for that time I would say.

Over all this is a surprising little book that I really wasn't expecting. I recommend anyone giving it a try and you won't be disappointed in it.

Detective Comics 1 (2011)

So we have come to the restarting of Detective Comics from The New 52. Please remember that this relaunch is basically proclaiming that everything has happened that you have read in DC Comics for over 50 years, but continuity wise it has been roughly 5 years since all of these heroes have appeared. Just a point of reference that I thought I should reaknowledge going into this review here.

Detective Comics, the comic of Batman. If you don't know that then I wonder if you really even know comics. Just kidding I understand if you are not that familiar with comics. This particular version is being written by Tony S. Daniel, who was originally an artist and then exapanded out to somewhat iffy reviews of writing. The art is from Ryan Winn, who I am not to familiar with honestly.

Tony S. Daniel as the writer seems to be a decent enough writer but seems like he is going for a shock value factor, which isn't really a bad thing in my eyes but may not be the way to become known for serious writing skill. His story is a kinda barebones hunt with explosions and blood. It even his the twist you would kind of expect as well as a little extra one.

I like the art. It is slightly kinetic to me. The lines are solid. I have seen a lot worse take a stab at Batman and be famous for it so I hope this guy does well for himself and continues growing as an artist. Colors are provided by Tomeu Morey, whom I have never heard of. The colors are a little bland and flat, but I think that is on purpose to try and convey a dingy and serious atmosphere. Whether it really pulls that off would be left to a person's tastes I think.

All in all I would say it is a decent issue. I do want to read the next because I am curious as to what happens next, which is the main goal of a comic I suppose being to get you to read the next one. In that I think it does well. So I would recommend this issue for reading.

Batwing 1 (2011)

Continuing on with The New 52 we come now to Batwing. Since Batwing is a new character I will do a very quick down and dirty brief on him. In the previous Batman comics before the New 52 initiative, Bruce Wayne was killed and replaced by Dick Grayson. We come to find out Bruce wasn't really killed just trhown out of time and he had to make his way back. Well he made his way back and instead of taking the mantle back from Dick he decided to initiate Batman Inc. This led him to recruiting Batmans in countries all over the world. When he visited Africa he sought out a man to where the mantle there and it turned out to be a cop named David Zavimbe. This man became Batwing. Now with the New 52 initiative it looks to me that Batwing made it to the big leagues.

The writer for this book is Judd Winick and the artist is Ben Oliver. It is set in Africa and this character seems to be getting his own rogue's gallery and everything. With me Judd Winick has a kind of spotty writing reputation. While some of his work is downright amazing, more tends to be tedious and lazy at the same time,. In this book's case I am enjoying the writing, He has brought life and interest to a character I really never even cared about. Batwing has immediately become one of my favorites. This is a shining book so far out of the start and it hopefully will continue to grow. I am eagerly looking forward to how this character and his stories evolve because of the very real interpretation I see in the setting. If you read the most recent Unknown Soldier series, the feel is very similar. I felt the strife and struggle in the people throughout the comic.

Artwise , Ben Oliver just adds to this book so much more with his more realistic looking art. While it can still easily be seen as drawings, the art is rather photorealistic and I enjoy that. The colors by Brian Weber add even more to this comic. It is beautiful blends and shadings that help highlight Oliver's art that much further. I hope this team is the team on this comic for a long time to come.

After a huge downer from OMAC, I am very relieved to see that it isn't the case with a still essentially new creation never seen before for the most part. I am eager for this series and very glad that this character is around and hope that he still interacts with the bat universe more from time to time. This is a good read and fantastic art. I give it a very good chance of you enjoying this issue.

OMAC 1 (2011)

The character O.M.A.C. has received his one series in The New 52 line up over at DC Comics. This comic is written by Dan Didio with art from Keith Giffen. This as well as  a few other comics that are being released haven't really had independent series or books too often. OMAC actually always seemed to be a tough character to me for writing because essentially it is an Artificial Intellegence that takes over a human host, or a cyber version of a werewolf if you will.

Dan Didio has not been writing for quite a while since having to deal with the company day to day runnings. It shows in this comic. His writing seems a little amateurish and dumbed down. He does seem to put in some aspects to get a character built but to me at least they are failing terribly. This comic, as of right now, is one of them that should have been left on the cutting room floor and not even attempted.

Art wise, Keith Giffen seems to have kind of phoned it in on this. You can easily tell it his art which is a good thing. At the same time however I get the feeling he just scribbled the pages down and sent in as is. It doesn't seem like he cared enough to put heart into this book, and I can't blame him on that because I really don't have the heart to read it. Hi-Fi is responsible for the coloring and it is decent enough coloring. It looks liek it is a comic from the '80s to me with the colors and hasty artwork.

This is one comic that seems to have really missed the mark. I couldn't get into the story at all yet I will read and review continuously in hopes to save others money or to inform you of improvements. I would recommend leaving this one on the shelf and going to get  a few sodas instead.

Until next time Peace Out

Justice League 1 (2011)

This issue is the first release that sets off the New DC 52. It came out the same day as Flashpoint 5. This is set up as an initial meeting and personality definitions as I can tell. You meet Batman, Green Lantern and Superman within this issue.

This is written by Geoff Johns with art by Jim Lee. That in itself will have been enough for a lot of my generation of comic lovers to pick up out of curiosity I think. I say this because Jim Lee draws people in for hi art if nothing else initially. Geoff Johns draws people because he has constantly been giving new birth to characters at DC.

The writing is most definitely Geoff Johns signature style. He plays up the animosity that the heroes may have toward each other quite a bit and it works really well. It doesn't dwell in one area for long but at the same time he does give you a good feeling of what is going on. Much like his other writings he has done, this issue leaves me with anticipation for the next issue and I am excited for it.

The art is Jim Lee for sure. His style has not changed that much but that is a good thing in his case I think. His costume redesigns are questioned by some but I honestly didn't even notice that there was a different design throughout the comic. His art is strong and bold with Inks that further that along by Scott Williams who very much accentuates the bold lines and crosshatch shading that is still very common for Jim Lee, if no on else. Alex Sinclair's colors used are very vibrant. Even his darker colors are vibrant without looking cheap. The color choices compliment the art very well and that is definitely a plus.

All in all this issue was a very good start for The New 52 and it really made my optimism of the decision go up. I apologize for this one not being first as I was absent minded when I reviewed Action Comics first LOL. Pick it up it is definitely worth the read.
